The Seven Unknown Wonders

Seven extraordinary places most travellers have never heard of.

Everyone can name the famous wonders. This guide is about the other kind — places of the same scale and strangeness that somehow never made it into the mental map most travellers carry around.

A ceremonial city built on artificial islands out in the open Pacific. Eleven churches cut downward into solid rock rather than built upward from it. A city carved beneath a plateau, deep enough to shelter thousands of people and their animals. An island where a large share of the plants grow nowhere else on earth.

This is a Nearbyly editorial selection, not an official list and not a replacement for anyone else's seven. Where something is genuinely uncertain we say so, and where a story is folklore we label it as folklore. Several of these places are remote, and travel conditions to some of them change — treat the practical notes as a starting point and check current official guidance before you plan anything.

No. 1

Nan Madol

Off the eastern edge of Pohnpei, in shallow water inside the reef, sits a city made of stone that nobody expects to find in the middle of the Pacific. Nan Madol is a complex of roughly a hundred artificial islets separated by tidal canals, its walls built from long columns of basalt stacked like enormous timber.

You approach it by boat at the right tide, and the scale only registers once you are next to a wall: individual stones weigh several tonnes, and the seaward retaining walls rise well above head height. Mangroves have grown into the canals, so it reads as half ruin, half tidal forest.

The story

Nan Madol was the ceremonial and political centre of the Saudeleur dynasty, which unified Pohnpei and ruled from here for centuries before its power collapsed. Construction of the islets and walls unfolded over a long period, with the most monumental phases generally placed in the later centuries of that rule.

The building material is columnar basalt — naturally hexagonal stone columns that form when thick lava cools slowly. Pohnpei has outcrops of it, and those columns were quarried, moved to the reef flat and stacked in alternating layers with coral rubble fill to make platforms and walls.

After the dynasty fell, the site was gradually abandoned as a residence but never lost its significance locally. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, because of shoreline erosion and mangrove growth, also on the list of World Heritage in Danger.

Why it’s a wonder

Monumental architecture in the middle of the ocean, assembled from stones a modern crew would need machinery to move — and it was done by a society working with rafts, ropes, levers and enormous organisation.

It is the only place on earth where an entire ceremonial city was built out onto a reef, and standing in the canals rearranges your assumptions about what Pacific societies were building while medieval Europe was building cathedrals.

What makes it extraordinary

  • Around a hundred separate artificial islets, laid out with canals between them that fill and drain with the tide.
  • Walls built from basalt columns rather than cut blocks — the stone arrives pre-shaped by geology, and the builders used it like log construction.
  • The mortuary compound of Nandauwas has retaining walls that stand many metres high, built without mortar.

What we know

  • The site was the seat of the Saudeleur rulers of Pohnpei, and the islets and walls were built up over generations.
  • The stone is local columnar basalt from Pohnpei, and the islets are made of stacked stone with coral fill.
  • The site remains culturally significant to Pohnpeians today, and access runs through the community that holds rights to it.

What remains a mystery

  • Exactly how the largest columns were transported across water and lifted into place — several methods have been proposed, none of them settled.
  • How large the resident population was, and how the labour to build at this scale was organised and fed.

Legend has it

Pohnpeian tradition tells of two brothers, Olisihpa and Olosohpa, who raised the stones by supernatural means. It is a living tradition worth hearing on site — and it is folklore, not an archaeological explanation.

Know before you go

  • Pohnpei is reached by air, and onward travel to the site is usually by boat with a local guide; the shallow canals are tide-dependent.
  • The land and access rights belong to local families and the surrounding community — visits are arranged locally and customary fees apply.
  • There is no visitor infrastructure at the ruins: no shade, no facilities, and footing is coral rubble and wet stone.

Do

  • Go with a Pohnpeian guide who can explain the site's meaning today, not just its archaeology.
  • Wear closed shoes with grip and expect to get wet.
  • Ask permission before photographing people, ceremonies or areas your guide flags as sensitive.

Don't

  • Don't climb on the walls — they are unmortared, unstable in places, and sacred to the community.
  • Don't remove stone, coral or anything else from the site.
  • Don't plan a rushed half-day: weather, tide and boat timing all have to line up.

Before you plan the trip

  • Arrange a guide before you arrive rather than turning up at the shoreline; access, fees and permitted routes are managed by the community.
  • Time your visit to the tide — arriving at the wrong point in the cycle changes what you can reach.

Watch out for

  • Slippery basalt and coral underfoot, with no handrails or maintained paths.
  • Equatorial sun and heat with essentially no shade.
  • Mosquitoes in the mangrove channels.

Ask your guide to take you to Nandauwas last. Seeing the smaller islets first gives you a sense of the standard wall height, which is what makes the mortuary compound land the way it should.

No. 2

Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela

The churches of Lalibela were not built. They were excavated — carved downward and inward out of solid volcanic rock, so that the finished buildings sit below ground level in open pits, connected by trenches and tunnels.

The most photographed of them, Bete Giyorgis, is a cross-shaped monolith standing free inside its own quarried courtyard. You walk to the rim, look down at a roof, and only then work out that the entire structure — walls, windows, columns, interior — is one continuous piece of the mountain with the surplus removed.

The story

Ethiopian tradition attributes the complex to King Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty, working in roughly the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, with the site conceived as a New Jerusalem for pilgrims.

The eleven churches divide into clusters on either side of a channel named for the River Jordan, linked by trenches, drainage cuts and tunnels through the rock.

The site has been a centre of Ethiopian Orthodox pilgrimage ever since, and remains so — the churches are staffed by priests, and the great festivals draw very large crowds.

Why it’s a wonder

Subtractive architecture at cathedral scale: eleven churches with no margin for error, because a wrong cut in a monolith cannot be undone or replaced.

These are not ruins and not a museum. They are working churches, in daily use, and a visit at dawn during a service is one of the few places where monumental medieval architecture is still doing exactly the job it was cut for.

What makes it extraordinary

  • Eleven monolithic and semi-monolithic churches, several fully freestanding within their own excavated pits.
  • Bete Giyorgis is cut as a single cross in plan, its roof at the level of the surrounding ground.
  • Interiors include carved columns, arches and window tracery — all of it produced by removing rock, never by assembling it.

What we know

  • The churches are cut from the living rock rather than constructed from blocks.
  • They are attributed to the reign of King Lalibela and have functioned continuously as Ethiopian Orthodox churches.
  • The complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major pilgrimage destination.

What remains a mystery

  • The precise construction sequence and duration — how many phases the work took, and whether some churches reuse earlier excavations.

Legend has it

Tradition holds that angels worked alongside the labourers by night, doubling each day's progress. It is a beloved part of the site's story, and it is tradition rather than history.

Know before you go

  • Lalibela sits at high altitude in the Ethiopian highlands; arriving from sea level, expect to move slowly the first day.
  • Entry is by a single site ticket covering the church clusters, and a local guide is genuinely worth it for the layout and the liturgy.
  • You remove your shoes to enter each church, so socks matter more than you'd think.

Do

  • Start at first light, when the churches are in use and the trenches are still cool and empty of tour groups.
  • Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered — for every church.
  • Take a torch for the connecting tunnels.

Don't

  • Don't photograph priests, worshippers or manuscripts without asking first.
  • Don't treat services as a spectacle; if a liturgy is under way, stand back or step out.
  • Don't try to see all eleven in one push — two half-days is a better shape.

Before you plan the trip

  • Conditions in parts of northern Ethiopia have varied significantly in recent years. Check your government's current travel advice and confirm the situation with an in-country operator before booking.
  • Major festivals such as Genna transform the site and fill accommodation months ahead — decide deliberately whether you want that or want quiet.

Watch out for

  • Steep, uneven steps and narrow trenches with drops and no railings.
  • Altitude fatigue and strong highland sun.
  • Dark, low tunnels that are genuinely disorienting without a light.

Nearbyly tip

Walk the northern cluster's trenches rather than the rim paths. Seeing the churches from the bottom of the excavation is the only way to understand how much rock was removed.

No. 3

Derinkuyu Underground City

From the surface, Derinkuyu is an unremarkable town on the Anatolian plateau. Below it is a multi-level city cut into soft volcanic tuff: stairways, stables, storerooms, wine and oil presses, chapels, wells and ventilation shafts, descending far enough that the lowest visitable levels are tens of metres down.

It is not a cave system that people adapted. It is a designed settlement, with circulation, air and water planned as carefully as the rooms.

The story

The Cappadocian tuff is soft enough to carve with hand tools and stable enough to hold a ceiling, which is why the region is riddled with rock-cut dwellings, churches and refuges.

Derinkuyu's excavation was expanded over many centuries and reached its most developed use in the Byzantine period, when local Christian communities used it as a refuge during raids and prolonged insecurity.

The complex was reopened to the public in the twentieth century after being rediscovered during work on a surface house, and only part of it is accessible to visitors today.

Why it’s a wonder

A subterranean city with engineered ventilation and defensive doors, sized to shelter a whole population — livestock included — for extended periods.

Most ancient sites ask you to imagine the missing parts. Here you walk the actual corridors at a crouch, past the actual millstone doors, and the logic of hiding an entire community underground becomes physically obvious.

What makes it extraordinary

  • Vertical ventilation shafts run the full depth, keeping air breathable on the lowest levels.
  • Heavy circular stone doors could be rolled across passages from the inside only — a defence you cannot open from the wrong side.
  • Whole functional quarters underground: stables, food stores, presses, a well system and religious spaces.

What we know

  • The complex is carved into volcanic tuff and expanded over long periods, with heavy use as a refuge in the Byzantine era.
  • It contains engineered ventilation shafts, water access and rolling stone doors operable only from within.
  • Only a fraction of the excavated volume is open to visitors.

What remains a mystery

  • When the earliest levels were first cut, and by whom — estimates vary and the site's continual reuse has erased much of the early evidence.
  • The full extent of the network and how far its reported connections to neighbouring underground settlements actually run.

Know before you go

  • It is an easy day trip from Göreme or Ürgüp, and works well combined with the Ihlara Valley.
  • The route is one-way in places, with low, narrow, steeply sloping tunnels and a lot of crouching.
  • It is cool underground year-round regardless of the surface temperature.

Do

  • Go early or late; midday coincides with tour-bus arrivals and the tunnels are single-file.
  • Bring a light layer for the temperature drop.
  • Follow the marked one-way circuit — reversing against it in a narrow tunnel is miserable for everyone.

Don't

  • Don't attempt it if you are strongly claustrophobic; some sections are genuinely tight and there are no shortcuts out.
  • Don't carry a large backpack — it will catch on every low ceiling.
  • Don't rely on phone signal underground.

Watch out for

  • Low ceilings and head-height rock — helmets are not issued, and people do hit their heads.
  • Slick, worn steps on the steeper connecting ramps.
  • Congestion at pinch points when several groups descend at once.

Stop at each ventilation shaft and look up. Tracking how the shafts connect the levels is what turns the visit from a tunnel walk into an understanding of how the place actually worked.

No. 4

Socotra Archipelago

Socotra is what happens when an island is isolated long enough. Cut off in the Arabian Sea, its plants evolved on their own track, and the result looks less like a tropical island than like a plausible alien planet: umbrella-shaped dragon's blood trees on limestone plateaus, swollen-trunked bottle trees flowering out of bare rock, and white dune fields running up against cliffs.

It is also a real place with towns, fishing villages, goats and a strong local culture — the strangeness is botanical, not theatrical.

The story

The archipelago separated from the mainland long ago and stayed dry and isolated, which let its plant lineages diverge with little competition or exchange.

The dragon's blood tree, with its inverted-umbrella crown, is the emblem of that process: the shape shades its own roots and channels moisture from mist down the trunk — a design for surviving on very little water.

Socotra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its ecosystems are under real pressure from grazing, storms and slow regeneration of the oldest tree stands.

Why it’s a wonder

Long isolation produced an entire flora of its own, with a large proportion of the island's plant species found nowhere else in the world.

There is nowhere else with this concentration of species you cannot see anywhere on earth, in a landscape open enough that you walk straight among them rather than viewing them from a boardwalk.

What makes it extraordinary

  • A very high share of the island's plant species are endemic — they exist here and nowhere else.
  • Dragon's blood trees bleed a deep red resin when cut, used locally for centuries.
  • The Detwah Lagoon and the Arher dunes put turquoise shallow water, white sand and limestone cliffs within a single view.

Know before you go

  • Travel is organised: visitors arrive on limited flights and travel with local operators, generally camping rather than staying in hotels.
  • Infrastructure is minimal — expect limited electricity, patchy connectivity and long drives on rough tracks.
  • Permits and entry arrangements are handled through operators and can change.

Do

  • Camp at least one night on the Dixam plateau or near the dunes; the light at either end of the day is the whole point.
  • Hire local guides and drivers — the money stays on the island and the tracks are not self-navigable.
  • Carry cash; card payment is not a realistic assumption.

Don't

  • Don't cut, carve or take resin from dragon's blood trees, and don't collect plants or seeds.
  • Don't count on connectivity for anything time-critical.
  • Don't wander off tracks in the limestone country alone — the terrain is sharp and featureless in places.

Before you plan the trip

  • Yemen is subject to serious travel advisories, and Socotra's practical situation differs from the mainland. Check your government's current advice, confirm insurance actually covers the trip, and use a reputable local operator.
  • Flight schedules to the island are limited and change seasonally; build slack into any onward booking.
  • The monsoon season brings winds strong enough to close access — confirm the operating window before committing.

Watch out for

  • Extreme heat and sun with very little shade on the plateaus.
  • Strong seasonal monsoon winds that can suspend flights and boat trips.
  • Limited medical facilities; evacuation is complicated and slow.

Ask your guide to time the Dixam plateau for late afternoon rather than midday. The dragon's blood canopies only read as that famous silhouette when the sun is low behind them.

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park

A desert of white dunes that fills with clear blue and green lagoons every year, and then dries out again. Lençóis Maranhenses looks like a Sahara that someone flooded, and the effect is entirely seasonal: rain falls on the sand, sits on an impermeable layer below it, and pools in every hollow between the dunes.

At the peak of the cycle you walk over a dune crest and there is a swimmable freshwater lagoon on the other side, then another, then another, to the horizon.

The story

The sand is carried inland from the coast by wind, building a vast field of transverse dunes just behind the shoreline.

Heavy rains arrive in the first half of the year. Because a hard layer beneath the sand stops the water draining away, the gaps between dunes fill and hold, forming lagoons that persist for months.

Through the second half of the year evaporation wins, the lagoons shrink and vanish, and the park becomes a dry white desert until the cycle restarts.

Why it’s a wonder

A dune field the size of a small region that turns, on schedule, into thousands of freshwater lagoons — and then empties itself again.

It is one of the few landscapes on earth that is fundamentally a different place depending on the month, and the version with water in it is genuinely surreal to stand in.

What makes it extraordinary

  • The lagoons are freshwater, clear, and warm enough to swim in comfortably.
  • It is not a true desert in climate terms — the region gets substantial rainfall; the sand simply cannot hold it.
  • Some lagoons hold fish, whose populations persist across the dry season in the wider system and reappear as waters return.

Know before you go

  • Access is from gateway towns such as Barreirinhas or Santo Amaro, usually by 4x4 transfer into the dunes.
  • There is no infrastructure inside the dune field — no shade, no water, no facilities.
  • The lagoons are seasonal; arriving in the wrong month means a dry white desert, which is beautiful but a completely different trip.

Do

  • Aim for the window after the rains when lagoons are full but tracks are passable.
  • Bring more water than feels necessary, plus sun protection you can reapply.
  • Walk beyond the first lagoon cluster; a short push over two or three more crests loses the crowd entirely.

Don't

  • Don't drive private vehicles into the dunes — access is via authorised operators and marked routes.
  • Don't use sunscreen immediately before swimming in the lagoons; rinse-off accumulates in small closed water bodies.
  • Don't underestimate the heat reflected off white sand at midday.

Before you plan the trip

  • Confirm current lagoon levels with a local operator before booking flights — the timing shifts year to year with the rains.

Watch out for

  • Severe sun exposure with zero shade and reflective sand.
  • Soft footing on dune faces, which is more tiring than the distances suggest.
  • Rapidly changing lagoon depth and extent between visits.

Book a late-afternoon dune transfer rather than a morning one. The sand cools, the light rakes across the crests, and the lagoons pick up colour that flat midday sun washes straight out.

Tsingy de Bemaraha

A forest of limestone blades. The tsingy is a karst plateau eroded into thousands of vertical stone spires with knife-edged tops, split by deep fissures and caves, with pockets of dry forest surviving in the gaps.

You cross it on via ferrata: clipped into fixed cables, over suspension bridges, up ladders and through slots barely wider than your shoulders. It is one of the few World Heritage landscapes you experience primarily by climbing through it.

The story

The rock is ancient marine limestone. Rainwater, slightly acidic, dissolved it along vertical joints over an immense span of time, cutting downward far faster than sideways.

The result is a maze of pinnacles above and a cave and canyon system below, with microhabitats isolated from one another by walls of stone.

The reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the isolation of its pockets supports species and populations that are extremely restricted in range.

Why it’s a wonder

Erosion turned a limestone plateau into a field of blades sharp enough that the local name means, roughly, where one cannot walk barefoot.

The combination is unrepeatable — a genuinely vertical rock labyrinth you traverse on cables, with lemurs moving through the same spires and plant life growing out of stone with almost no soil.

What makes it extraordinary

  • Limestone pinnacles rising tens of metres with edges genuinely capable of cutting skin and shoe rubber.
  • Marked routes use via ferrata cables, ladders and rope bridges rather than footpaths.
  • Lemurs, chameleons and endemic birds live in and around the formations, some in habitat pockets separated by impassable stone.

Know before you go

  • Getting there is the hard part: long drives on rough roads from Morondava, with river crossings, and the approach is normally impossible in the wet season.
  • Park guides are mandatory, and harnesses are required on the via ferrata circuits.
  • Circuits are graded — there are shorter, less exposed options as well as the full traverse.

Do

  • Book the guided circuit that matches your actual comfort with heights, not the one that looks best in photographs.
  • Wear sturdy boots and gloves — the rock takes hands and soles apart.
  • Start at dawn for wildlife activity and cooler rock.

Don't

  • Don't attempt the circuits with a serious fear of heights or exposure; there are long committed sections.
  • Don't touch or feed lemurs.
  • Don't try to travel the access roads independently in marginal conditions.

Before you plan the trip

  • The park effectively closes for the rainy season when roads become impassable. Confirm the current operating window and road conditions before booking.
  • Budget significantly more travel time than distance suggests; the drive is measured in days, not hours.

Watch out for

  • Extremely sharp rock — falls cause lacerations, not just bruises.
  • Heat and dehydration on exposed stone.
  • Seasonal road closures that can strand a tight itinerary.

Take gardening-weight gloves rather than thin climbing gloves. Nearly everyone underestimates how much they will grab the rock, and the tsingy shreds light fabric.

Great Zimbabwe

Great Zimbabwe is the stone capital of a medieval southern African state, and the scale of it is the first surprise: curving walls metres thick and metres high, built of granite blocks laid without mortar, running for hundreds of metres across a hillside and the valley below.

The Great Enclosure's outer wall is the largest ancient structure south of the Sahara, and inside it a solid conical tower stands with no doorway, no stairway and no known practical function.

The story

The site was the centre of a Shona state that grew wealthy on cattle, agriculture and long-distance trade, with gold and ivory moving to the Indian Ocean coast and goods arriving in return.

Construction unfolded over centuries in the second millennium, with the Hill Complex, the Great Enclosure and the Valley Ruins reflecting different phases and functions.

The site declined as the state's centre of power shifted. In the colonial era its African origin was aggressively denied — a distortion that archaeology had already contradicted and that has been thoroughly refuted since. The modern nation takes its name from the site.

Why it’s a wonder

A city of dry-stone architecture at monumental scale, built without mortar and still standing after many centuries.

It is the direct physical answer to a question a lot of travellers have never thought to ask about medieval southern Africa — and walking the narrow passage between the double walls is a piece of designed architectural theatre.

What makes it extraordinary

  • Walls built entirely of shaped granite blocks laid dry, with no mortar of any kind.
  • The Great Enclosure's outer wall runs roughly 250 metres and reaches around 11 metres in height in places.
  • Imported goods excavated on site show trade links reaching the Indian Ocean world.

What we know

  • Great Zimbabwe was built and occupied by ancestral Shona communities and was the centre of a substantial trading state.
  • The stonework is mortarless granite, built in distinct phases across the site.
  • Finds at the site demonstrate long-distance trade connections.

What remains a mystery

  • The purpose of the Conical Tower, which is solid and has no entrance or interior.
  • The precise reasons for the site's decline, with environmental pressure, resource exhaustion and shifting trade routes all argued.

  • It sits close to Masvingo and is straightforward to reach by road; a site museum holds the famous soapstone birds.
  • The Hill Complex is reached by a steep ancient stairway; the valley sections are gentler.
  • Guides at the entrance are worth taking for the sequence and the history of the site's interpretation.

  • Climb the Hill Complex early, before the heat, and look down over the Great Enclosure to read the layout.
  • Walk the narrow parallel passage inside the Great Enclosure — it is the best-preserved piece of the design.
  • Visit the museum before the ruins, so the soapstone birds have context.

  • Don't climb on the walls; they are dry-stone and vulnerable.
  • Don't rush the valley ruins — they carry much of the everyday evidence of how the city functioned.
  • Don't repeat the discredited colonial-era claim that the site was built by outsiders.

  • Strong sun with limited shade across the open site.
