You do not have to leave the United States to find ground that looks like it belongs to a different planet. There is a desert made of white gypsum, a salt plain flat enough to see the curve of the horizon, sandstone that appears mid-pour, a cave chamber you could park a stadium inside, and a geyser that exists because somebody drilled a well and walked away.

Photographs of these places get accused of being fake constantly. Usually they are not. What is missing from the photograph is everything else: the permit lottery, the tribal permission, the road that turns to glue when it rains, the 108°F afternoon, the three-hour drive to the nearest fuel.

So this guide does four things for each place. It tells you what you are actually looking at, why the Earth made it look that way, whether you can genuinely go there, and what the pretty picture left out. These are Nearbyly editorial picks in no particular order — not a scientific ranking, and not a complete list. Access rules, fees and seasonal conditions change, so treat every practical note here as a starting point and confirm with the official source before you drive.

White Sands National Park

Between two mountain ranges in southern New Mexico, roughly 275 square miles of desert basin are buried under dunes the colour of fresh snow. The park road climbs onto the dune field and the asphalt simply gives up — beyond a certain point you are driving on graded white sand, with pull-offs, picnic shelters and boardwalks scattered through it.

The scale takes a minute to register because there is nothing to give it away. No trees, no buildings, few shadows at midday. People sled down the slopes on waxed plastic discs, and from a hundred yards away they look like they are on a ski hill in July.

Why it’s worth the trip

It is the largest gypsum dune field on Earth, and walking into it removes almost every visual cue your brain uses to judge distance and season.

Why it doesn’t look real

Your eyes read snowdrifts and your skin reads desert heat, and the two never reconcile. The sand is cool to the touch even on a scorching afternoon, the horizon glares white in every direction, and photographs come out looking like a badly composited winter scene dropped into a desert.

Okay… how did this happen?

The gypsum started out as an ancient sea. Hundreds of millions of years ago this region sat under shallow water that repeatedly evaporated, leaving thick beds of gypsum — calcium sulfate — locked in the rock.

Later, the crust here stretched and dropped, creating the Tularosa Basin between the San Andres and Sacramento mountains. Rain and snowmelt dissolve gypsum out of those mountains and carry it down into the basin. Crucially, the basin has no outlet to the sea, so the water has nowhere to go but into the flats and then into the air.

As it evaporates it leaves crystals of selenite behind on the lakebed. Wind grinds those crystals against each other into fine white grains and pushes them northeast into dunes. Because gypsum is soft and slightly soluble, the grains stay bright rather than weathering into ordinary quartz-coloured sand — and the whole system keeps refilling itself.

Can I actually go there?

YES — easy public access. It is a national park with a paved entrance road, a visitor centre and marked trails. The one real catch: the park sits beside White Sands Missile Range and closes temporarily for scheduled missile tests, sometimes for a couple of hours, so check the park's closure notices the morning you go.

What the photos don’t tell you

There is essentially no shade past the visitor centre, and the reflected glare off white ground is closer to being on a glacier than a beach — people get sunburned under their chin. Off the boardwalk the dunes also look identical in every direction, which is exactly why the park hammers on about carrying water and marking your route.

Does it really look like the photos?

YES — but light does the heavy lifting. Midday is flat, blinding and unphotogenic; the sculpted ridgelines and blue shadows everyone posts appear in the last hour before sunset and the first after sunrise.

Know before you go

  • Alamogordo is the nearest town for fuel, food and lodging, about 15 miles east.
  • The dune road is packed gypsum, fine for regular cars when you stay on it.
  • Cell coverage is patchy inside the dune field.

Do

  • Buy or rent a sled at the visitor centre and use it on a dune with a clean run-out.
  • Walk at least one full loop of the Dune Life Nature Trail or the interdune boardwalk to see the plants and animals living in the white.
  • Bring more water than feels sensible, plus sunglasses and something to cover your neck.

Don't

  • Don't drive off the marked sand road — soft gypsum strands ordinary cars quickly.
  • Don't set out across open dunes without following the trail markers; the landscape offers no landmarks.
  • Don't assume the park will be open all day without checking for a missile-range closure.

Check before you go

  • Missile-range test closures for the day you plan to visit.
  • Current entrance fees, hours and any sunset or full-moon programme schedules.
  • Wind advisories — blowing gypsum can make the dune road miserable.

Watch out for

  • Extreme summer heat combined with reflected glare and near-zero shade.
  • Disorientation off-trail — dunes shift and footprints blow over within hours.
  • Sudden closures for missile testing that can turn you around at the gate.

Nearbyly tip

Stay for sunset and then stay a little longer. The park runs into evening on many nights, the white ground holds colour after the sun drops, and the dark-sky quality out here is exceptional once traffic thins.

The Wave

The Wave is a small sandstone bowl on the Arizona side of the Paria Canyon–Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, and it is genuinely small — the famous formation is a feature you can walk across in a couple of minutes. What makes it famous is the surface: fine bands of red, orange, cream and pink sweeping through the rock in continuous curves, as if the ground froze mid-motion.

Getting to it is a roughly three-mile cross-country walk each way with no trail, no signage and no water, navigating by landmarks and GPS over slickrock and sand.

Why it’s worth the trip

There is no other place where cross-bedded sandstone has been sliced open at exactly the angle that turns 190-million-year-old dunes into flowing stripes at human scale.

Why it doesn’t look real

The rock looks poured rather than eroded. Colour bands run over every curve without a break, following the shape of the bowl like paint on a car body, and the surface is smooth enough that photos read as a rendering rather than stone.

Okay… how did this happen?

In the Jurassic, this whole region was an enormous sand sea — dunes on the scale of the Sahara. Wind piled sand into sloping layers, and each shift in wind direction left a new set of layers cutting across the old ones. That internal structure is called cross-bedding.

The dunes were buried, compressed and cemented into Navajo Sandstone. Groundwater carrying iron then moved through the rock, staining some layers deep red and leaving others pale, which is why the bands differ in colour rather than just in texture.

Much later, erosion cut down into that rock and exposed the ancient dune layering in cross-section. Runoff scoured out a shallow drainage, and wind kept polishing it. The 'flow' you see is simply the edges of buried dunes, sliced open and smoothed.

Can I actually go there?

YES — but only with a permit, and permits are limited. Access to Coyote Buttes North is managed by the Bureau of Land Management through a lottery with a strict daily cap on visitors. There is an advance lottery and a separate near-term one; both are competitive, and success rates in peak months are low. Going without a permit is a citable offence, and there is no walk-up option at the trailhead.

What the photos don’t tell you

The hike is unmarked in open desert with no shade and no water source, and route-finding is on you. People are rescued from this area regularly, and there have been heat-related deaths. The formation is also tiny and shared with everyone else holding a permit that day, so a clean empty frame usually means waiting your turn.

Does it really look like the photos?

YES — but saturation in many published images runs hot. In flat midday light the colours are softer and chalkier than your phone's camera roll has led you to expect.

Know before you go

  • Kanab, Utah and Page, Arizona are the practical bases for supplies and lodging.
  • There are no facilities, water or reliable cell service at the trailhead or en route.
  • Group sizes and daily entries are capped as a condition of the permit.

Do

  • Enter the lottery well ahead and keep a backup plan such as nearby Wire Pass or Buckskin Gulch.
  • Download offline maps and the BLM's photo-based route directions before you lose signal.
  • Carry at least a gallon of water per person and start early.

Don't

  • Don't attempt it without a permit — the area is patrolled and fines are real.
  • Don't rely on following other people's footprints; sand erases them.
  • Don't walk on the fragile fins and ridges around the bowl.

Before you plan the trip

  • Confirm current lottery mechanics, fees and daily quotas with the BLM before booking travel around a visit.
  • Check road conditions on House Rock Valley Road; a high-clearance vehicle is often advisable and rain changes everything.

Check before you go

  • Permit lottery dates, quotas and the required check-in process.
  • Weather in the wider drainage — flash-flood risk is not local to where you stand.
  • Access road condition after any recent rain or snow.

Watch out for

  • Extreme heat and dehydration; summer afternoons here are dangerous, not merely uncomfortable.
  • Navigation error on a route with no trail and few distinct landmarks.
  • Flash flooding in the washes after storms, including storms you cannot see.
  • The access road, House Rock Valley Road, which becomes impassable when wet.

Nearbyly tip

If you draw a permit, budget the whole day rather than treating it as a quick out-and-back — the surrounding buttes hold formations nearly as strange as the Wave itself and almost nobody photographs them.

Fly Geyser

In the high desert north of Gerlach, three lumpy mineral towers a few feet tall spit water continuously into a series of terraced pools. They are coated in red, orange and green, and steam drifts off the whole thing against an empty valley floor.

It looks ancient and alien. It is neither — the geyser is younger than most people who go to see it, and it exists because of a well.

Why it’s worth the trip

It is a working, growing hot-spring cone that you can watch build itself, created by accident within living memory.

Why it doesn’t look real

The colours are the problem. Vivid orange and green run over cones that look organic rather than mineral, water sprays from several points at once, and the surrounding valley is dead flat and beige — so the geyser appears pasted onto the landscape.

Okay… how did this happen?

The valley sits over a geothermal system: groundwater circulates deep, heats up and rises along faults. Drillers tapped that hot water. One well drilled in the 1960s was left uncapped, and pressurised geothermal water has been escaping ever since.

That water is loaded with dissolved minerals, mostly calcium carbonate and silica. When it hits the surface and cools and degasses, the minerals drop out of solution and cement onto whatever the water runs over. Decade after decade, the deposits build upward into cones — the same process that builds travertine terraces at natural hot springs, just started by a drill rig.

The colours are biology, not mineral pigment. Thermophilic algae and bacteria live in the warm runoff, and different species tolerate different temperatures, so the bands of red, orange and green track how hot the water is where they grow.

Can I actually go there?

YES — but only on an authorised, booked visit. Fly Geyser sits on private land, now Fly Ranch, held by the Burning Man Project, and it is not a roadside stop. Access is through scheduled guided walks that are booked in advance and run seasonally. The geyser can be glimpsed at a distance from the public highway, but the fence line is the boundary — people have been cited for climbing it.

What the photos don’t tell you

Almost every famous photo is shot from close range on an authorised visit, not from where a casual traveller stands. On a walk you also keep your distance from the cones themselves: the water is scalding, the crust is fragile, and the tour route reflects that.

Does it really look like the photos?

MOSTLY — the shapes and the steam are exactly as advertised, but the neon-intensity colour in many viral images is pushed. In person the reds and greens are rich but more muted.

Know before you go

  • Gerlach is the last practical stop for fuel and food; Reno is roughly two hours away.
  • The walk itself is over uneven desert ground, not a paved path.
  • Sun protection matters — there is no shade anywhere near the site.

Do

  • Book an authorised walk in advance rather than driving out hoping for access.
  • Bring binoculars or a long lens; you will not be standing on top of the cones.
  • Plan fuel and food around Gerlach — services out here are thin.

Don't

  • Don't cross fences or enter the property without a booking.
  • Don't touch or stand on the mineral crust; it is both scalding and easily damaged.
  • Don't count on the site being open — walks are seasonal and weather-dependent.

Bonneville Salt Flats

West of the Great Salt Lake, near the Nevada line, the ground turns into a hard white crust so flat that the mountains on the far side appear to float. In dry months you can walk — and in designated areas drive — out onto salt that stretches for miles with no features at all.

In wet months a shallow film of water sits on the surface and the whole plain becomes a mirror, which is when the reflection photographs everyone knows get made.

Why it’s worth the trip

It is one of the flattest surfaces in North America, flat enough that land-speed records have been chased here for a century.

Why it doesn’t look real

There is no middle distance. The ground is white, the sky is enormous, and nothing between you and the mountains gives your eye anything to hold. People appear to hover, cars appear to sit on nothing, and when the plain is wet the horizon disappears entirely into its own reflection.

Okay… how did this happen?

During the last ice age, much of western Utah lay under Lake Bonneville, a freshwater lake on the scale of one of the Great Lakes. As the climate dried, the lake shrank drastically, and its old shorelines are still visible cut into the mountainsides.

That water contained dissolved salts. With no outlet, evaporation concentrated them, and as the lake retreated it left the minerals behind on the basin floor — mostly common salt, along with gypsum and other compounds.

The crust is still dynamic. Winter rain and runoff dissolve the surface and spread it into a thin brine layer; summer heat evaporates it and re-deposits salt in a flat, even sheet. That annual reset is what keeps the plain so extraordinarily level.

Can I actually go there?

YES — easy public access, with limits. The flats are public land managed by the BLM, reachable off Interstate 80, and there is a rest area with an access road onto the salt. Driving onto the crust is only sensible when it is dry and only where permitted; racing events close sections of the flats on a seasonal calendar.

What the photos don’t tell you

The mirror photos and the drive-on-the-salt photos happen in different seasons — you generally cannot have both on the same trip. Wet salt is also a trap: vehicles break through the crust and get badly stuck, and salt brine is brutally corrosive to a car's underside.

Does it really look like the photos?

SEASONALLY. The reflective mirror appears when a thin layer of water sits on the surface, mostly in cooler, wetter months. In high summer you get hard, cracked white ground, which is a different and much less viral picture.

  • Wendover, on the Utah–Nevada line, is the nearest place for fuel, food and lodging.
  • There is no shade, water or shelter on the flats themselves.
  • The rest area off I-80 is the standard, legal starting point.

Do

  • Check whether an event is running before you go; race weeks restrict access but are a spectacle in themselves.
  • Rinse your vehicle's underside thoroughly afterwards if you drive on the salt.
  • Bring sunglasses — the glare is severe.

Don't

  • Don't drive onto wet or soft salt, however firm it looks from the rest area.
  • Don't leave litter or dig into the crust; the surface is actively managed and monitored.
  • Don't rely on landmarks to find your way back to the access road on foot.

Check before you go

  • Whether the salt is wet, and whether vehicle access is currently allowed.
  • The speed-event calendar, which closes parts of the flats.

Watch out for

  • Soft, waterlogged crust that swallows vehicles.
  • Intense reflected sunlight and heat with zero shade.
  • Corrosive salt on vehicles and gear.
  • Long distances between services along this stretch of I-80.

Nearbyly tip

Go at sunrise. The salt picks up colour from the sky, the wind is usually calmer, and if there is any water on the surface the reflection is at its cleanest before the day's breeze wrinkles it.

Mono Lake

East of Yosemite, at the edge of the Great Basin, a pale blue lake sits in a volcanic basin ringed by knobbly limestone towers. The towers — tufa — rise straight out of the shallows and the shoreline, some of them taller than a person, clustered like a ruined city.

The water is roughly three times as salty as the ocean and strongly alkaline. Nothing with a backbone lives in it, yet in summer the surface swarms with brine flies and the air is full of birds.

Why it’s worth the trip

It is a hypersaline lake with a fully functioning ecosystem built on almost nothing, decorated with mineral spires that only formed because the water level dropped.

Why it doesn’t look real

The tufa towers look constructed. They stand in ranks in glassy water, cream-coloured against deep blue, and at dawn the lake goes so still that the reflection is indistinguishable from the towers themselves.

Okay… how did this happen?

Mono Lake is very old and has no outlet. Streams from the Sierra Nevada carry dissolved minerals in; only water leaves, by evaporation. Over a very long time that has concentrated carbonates and salts until the lake became both salty and strongly alkaline.

The tufa formed underwater. Freshwater springs seep up through the lakebed carrying calcium; the lake water is loaded with carbonate. Where the two meet, calcium carbonate precipitates and slowly builds a tower around the spring vent, like limescale growing around a leak.

The towers are only visible because the lake shrank. When streams feeding the lake were diverted to supply Los Angeles, the level fell sharply and exposed structures that had been growing beneath the surface — which is why an ecological controversy is also the reason you can photograph them.

The ecosystem itself is short and strange: algae feed brine shrimp and alkali flies, and those feed enormous numbers of migratory birds. No fish, and no need for them.

Can I actually go there?

YES — easy public access. The South Tufa area within the Mono Basin National Forest Scenic Area has a parking area, a fee station and a short interpretive trail through the formations. County Park boardwalks on the north shore offer another approach.

What the photos don’t tell you

In summer the shoreline is carpeted with alkali flies — harmless, non-biting, and present in numbers that surprise people. The lake is also at around 6,400 feet, so the sun is fierce and the wind can be cold in the same hour.

Does it really look like the photos?

YES — but the mirror-calm reflection shots depend on a windless dawn. By mid-morning the surface usually chops up and the picture changes completely.

  • Don't climb on the tufa; it is fragile and protected.
  • Don't expect to swim comfortably — the water is caustic enough to sting cuts and eyes.
  • Don't skip Lee Vining for supplies; options thin out fast in either direction.

  • Tioga Pass status if you are coming through Yosemite — it closes with snow.
  • Current fees and trail conditions at South Tufa.

Watch out for

  • Altitude and strong high-desert sun.
  • Slippery, sharp footing around the tufa and shoreline mud.

Nearbyly tip

Come back after dark if you can. The basin has very little light pollution, and the towers silhouetted against the Milky Way are the shot most day visitors miss entirely.

Painted Hills

In eastern Oregon's dry interior, a cluster of low, smooth hills is banded in ochre, gold, black and a distinct dusty red. There is no vegetation on them at all — the slopes are bare, finely ridged claystone, and the stripes run horizontally around the hills like contour lines.

Short trails and overlooks ring the unit, all of them keeping you off the hills themselves.

Why it’s worth the trip

The colour bands are a readable record of climate change over millions of years, sitting in the open at a scale you can take in from one overlook.

Why it doesn’t look real

The hills look painted rather than eroded, and the surface has a soft, velvety texture with no plants, no rocks and no shadows to break it up — so photographs read as an illustration.

Okay… how did this happen?

This region spent tens of millions of years downwind of active volcanoes. Repeated ash falls buried the landscape again and again, and each ash layer weathered in place into clay.

What the clay turned into depended on the climate at the time. Warm, wet, heavily vegetated periods produced deep red soils rich in iron oxides. Drier, cooler periods produced the tans and yellows. Black layers are largely manganese and old plant material. Stacked up, those ancient soils became the stripes.

Erosion then stripped away the harder rock above and rounded the soft claystone into hills. The clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, which cracks the surface into that fine popcorn texture and prevents plants from taking hold — leaving the colour completely exposed.

Can I actually go there?

YES — easy public access. The Painted Hills Unit of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is open to the public with a gravel access road, parking, overlooks and short trails including a boardwalk into the Painted Cove.

What the photos don’t tell you

You cannot walk on the hills — every trail keeps you at the edge, because footprints in that clay can last for years. The colours are also strongly weather-dependent: they intensify when the surface is damp and go pale and dusty under strong midday sun.

Does it really look like the photos?

MOSTLY — the banding is real, but a lot of published images push saturation hard. Come after light rain or in low evening light and you will get closer to the vivid version honestly.

  • Drive up to the Carroll Rim trailhead viewpoint for the overhead perspective.
  • Pair the visit with the monument's Thomas Condon Paleontology Center to see what came out of these rocks.

  • Don't step off the trails onto the hills, ever.
  • Don't come only at midday; the colours flatten badly.
  • Don't expect services at the unit — there is no food or fuel nearby.

Chiricahua National Monument

In southeastern Arizona, a mountain range rises out of the grassland and its slopes are covered in stone columns — thousands of them, standing upright in rows and clusters, some slender enough to look like they should have fallen over already.

A scenic drive climbs to Massai Point, and a network of trails drops down among the columns so you walk through corridors of rock rather than looking at them from above.

Why it’s worth the trip

Few places let you walk among balanced rock spires at this density, and the surrounding sky-island ecology is as unusual as the geology.

Why it doesn’t look real

The columns stand like a crowd. Many are topped by boulders that appear to be balanced by hand, and from the overlooks the hillsides look tiled with stone figures rather than eroded.

Okay… how did this happen?

Around 27 million years ago a nearby volcanic centre produced a colossal eruption — vastly larger than anything in recorded history. It buried this area in searing volcanic ash hundreds of feet deep.

The ash was hot enough to weld itself together as it settled, forming a hard rock called rhyolite tuff. As that thick sheet cooled it contracted and cracked, developing a grid of vertical joints running through it.

Everything since has been water and ice exploiting those cracks. Rain gets in, freezes, expands and widens the joints; over millions of years the rock between them is worn away and what remains stands as columns. Where a harder cap rock protected the top of a column, you get the balanced-boulder look.

Can I actually go there?

YES — easy public access. It is a national monument with a paved scenic drive, a visitor centre and a well-maintained trail system; a seasonal shuttle sometimes supports one-way hikes down from Massai Point.

What the photos don’t tell you

It is remote. The nearest towns are small and an hour or more away, and the trails that get you among the columns involve real elevation change at altitude — the classic Echo Canyon–Heart of Rocks routes are half-day hikes, not viewpoints.

Does it really look like the photos?

YES — and arguably better, because photographs flatten the depth. Standing in a corridor of rock with columns receding behind columns is the part that does not compress into an image.

Antelope Canyon

From the desert surface, Antelope Canyon is a crack in the ground. Inside, it opens into narrow sandstone corridors with walls that curve and fold overhead, sometimes only a few feet apart, sometimes over a hundred feet deep.

The canyon lies within the Navajo Nation and is visited only with Navajo guides. Upper and Lower Antelope are separate sections with different tour operators and a different feel underground.

Why it’s worth the trip

It is the clearest demonstration anywhere of what moving water does to sandstone, experienced from inside the sculpture rather than outside it.

Why it doesn’t look real

The walls appear to be in motion. Sandstone folds run in continuous waves above your head, and light bouncing between them turns orange, purple and gold depending on where it enters — colours that look like they were added afterwards.

Okay… how did this happen?

The rock is Navajo Sandstone: ancient wind-blown dunes, cemented into stone, relatively soft and full of internal layering.

The canyon is carved by flash floods. Rain that falls miles away runs off slickrock instead of soaking in, funnels into a single drainage and arrives here as a fast, sand-loaded surge. That sand is the cutting tool — the water sandblasts the channel deeper and wider each time.

Because the flow swirls as it moves, the erosion is not a straight slot but a series of scallops and flutes, deeper where the current pressed hardest. The visible layering is the old dune bedding being sliced at different angles as the channel wanders.

The famous colour is indirect light. Sun entering the narrow opening reflects off one wall onto another, and each bounce shifts the tone warmer — which is why the canyon glows without any direct sunbeam reaching you.

Can I actually go there?

YES — but only on an authorised tour with a Navajo guide. Antelope Canyon is on Navajo Nation land and is not open for independent hiking. Tours are booked in advance through Navajo-authorised operators, permits and tribal fees apply, and photography rules, bag restrictions and tour lengths are set by the operators and the Navajo Nation, not by visitors.

What the photos don’t tell you

It is a guided walk on a schedule with other people, not a solitary wander — those empty-corridor images are the product of timing, framing and often photography-specific tours. The canyon also closes when there is any flood risk, and closures can happen under a clear sky above you.

Does it really look like the photos?

YES — but lighting decides everything. The dramatic beams appear only in a narrow window around midday in certain months in Upper Antelope; outside that, the canyon is beautiful but softer and darker than the postcards.

Badlands National Park

Driving west across South Dakota, the prairie is flat and green and then, without much warning, the ground falls away into a maze of striped spires, ridges and gullies running to the horizon.

A loop road follows the rim with overlooks every few miles, and short trails — including a ladder climb at Notch Trail — drop into the formations themselves.

Why it’s worth the trip

It is a vast, actively eroding landscape you can walk into, layered with one of the richest fossil beds in the country.

Why it doesn’t look real

The transition is the strange part. Grassland runs right up to the edge and then becomes a sharp-edged badlands maze with no foothills or warning, striped in bands that continue perfectly level across every separate ridge for miles.

Okay… how did this happen?

The layers were laid down over tens of millions of years in very different worlds: a shallow inland sea, then floodplains and forests, then volcanic ash blowing in from eruptions far to the west. Each environment left sediment of a different colour and hardness — which is why the stripes line up across ridges that are now separated by empty air.

Then the region was uplifted, and rivers began cutting down through the soft sediments. The rock here is poorly cemented mudstone and siltstone, so water carves it fast rather than smoothing it.

The erosion rate is the headline. These formations are wearing away at roughly an inch a year — geologically breakneck. The park is temporary in a way most landscapes are not, and the same rapid erosion keeps exposing new fossils.

Can I actually go there?

YES — easy public access. There is a paved loop road, a visitor centre, campgrounds and marked trails, and the park is one of the few where open off-trail hiking is permitted in much of the backcountry.

What the photos don’t tell you

There is no shade and very little water, and the exposed rock radiates heat in summer. The soft sediment is also far more slippery than it looks — dry it crumbles, wet it becomes greasy clay that will put you on the ground.

Does it really look like the photos?

YES — but the colour banding is much stronger at either end of the day. Under midday sun the whole landscape washes out to grey-tan and looks like a different place.

Lassen Volcanic National Park

In far northern California, a park most people drive past contains boiling mud pots, roaring steam vents, milky turquoise pools and a mountain that erupted in the twentieth century.

A boardwalk at Bumpass Hell crosses a basin of hydrothermal features; elsewhere the park is alpine lakes, conifer forest and a highway that climbs above 8,000 feet.

Why it’s worth the trip

It packs all four recognised volcano types into one park and lets you stand a few feet from actively boiling ground without leaving a boardwalk.

Why it doesn’t look real

The colour and the noise. Pools glow pale blue and yellow-green against grey mud, vents hiss loudly enough to talk over, and the whole basin steams — set against a normal pine forest that starts fifty yards away.

Okay… how did this happen?

Lassen sits at the southern end of the Cascade Range, where an oceanic plate is sliding beneath North America. Water driven off that descending slab makes the rock above melt, and that magma rises to build volcanoes.

A body of hot rock still sits beneath the park. Snowmelt and rain percolate down, get heated, and rise back up as steam and hot water. Where that water reaches the surface it cooks the rock into clay — which is why the mud pots exist and why the ground is pale and crumbly.

The colours come from chemistry and microbes: sulfur compounds, iron minerals and heat-loving organisms that tint the pools and crusts. The smell of rotten eggs is hydrogen sulfide coming off the same system.

Lassen Peak itself is a plug dome — thick, sticky lava that piled up rather than flowing away. It erupted in a series of events beginning in 1914, with a major blast in 1915 that devastated an area still visible as the Devastated Area today.

Can I actually go there?

YES — but access is seasonal. The main park highway crosses high country and is closed by snow for a large part of the year, often into early summer. Once open, the road, visitor centres and boardwalk trails are straightforward for most visitors.

What the photos don’t tell you

The Bumpass Hell trail is a real hike with elevation at altitude, not a roadside pull-off, and the ground beside the boardwalk is thin crust over water hot enough to cause severe burns. Snow lingers here far later than people expect for California.

Does it really look like the photos?

YES — the hydrothermal colours are genuine. What images cannot convey is the sound and the smell, which are a bigger part of the experience than the view.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

From the surface this is unremarkable Chihuahuan Desert scrub. Then you walk down through a gaping natural entrance, switchback after switchback, and after a mile of descent the passage opens into a chamber so large that the lighting cannot reach the far end.

The Big Room is the centrepiece — a level paved loop through a space of many acres, filled with stalagmites, columns and formations the size of buildings.

Why it’s worth the trip

It is one of the largest and most accessible cave chambers on Earth, and you can experience it on a paved, self-guided walk.

Why it doesn’t look real

Scale breaks down underground. Formations you assume are a few feet tall turn out to be as high as a house, and the room extends past the reach of the lights, so photographs give you no sense of where anything ends.

Okay… how did this happen?

The bedrock is an ancient reef. Roughly 250 million years ago a shallow sea covered this area, and a long reef of limestone built up along its edge. The sea dried out, the reef was buried, and later uplift raised it into the mountains you see today.

The cave was then dissolved out of that limestone — but not, as in most caves, mainly by rainwater. Oil and gas deposits deep below released hydrogen sulfide, which mixed with oxygen-rich groundwater to form sulfuric acid. That acid ate out the chambers from below, which is why the rooms here are so enormous.

Evidence of the process is still on the walls: thick gypsum deposits left behind as a by-product of the acid reacting with limestone.

The decoration came later. Once the chambers drained, water seeping down through the rock carried dissolved calcium carbonate, and each drop left a trace behind — building stalactites, stalagmites, columns and draperies over hundreds of thousands of years.

Can I actually go there?

YES — with a reservation, and easily once you have one. The park uses timed-entry reservations for the self-guided routes, and you can descend on foot through the natural entrance or take the elevator. Ranger-guided tours into wilder sections book separately and fill early.

What the photos don’t tell you

The natural-entrance route is a mile-plus of continuous steep switchbacks — easy going down, unpleasant coming up, which is why most people take the elevator out. It is also around 56°F underground year-round regardless of the desert heat above.

Does it really look like the photos?

MOSTLY — the formations are exactly as strange as photographed, but images are long exposures. Your eyes see a much darker, moodier cave than any photo shows.

Devils Tower National Monument

In the rolling pine country of northeastern Wyoming, a flat-topped tower of grey rock rises abruptly out of the trees, its sides covered in enormous vertical columns running from base to summit.

A paved loop trail circles the base in a bit over a mile, close enough that fallen columns the size of railcars lie in the boulder field beside the path.

Why it’s worth the trip

It is one of the most striking columnar rock formations on Earth, and it remains a sacred site for numerous Northern Plains tribes — a place with two equally important stories.

Why it doesn’t look real

Nothing prepares you for it. The surrounding country is gentle and wooded, and then a fluted grey monolith stands several hundred feet above the treetops with its columns so regular they look machined.

Okay… how did this happen?

Around 50 million years ago, molten rock pushed up into sedimentary layers here and stalled underground rather than erupting. Geologists still debate exactly what form that intrusion took — a plug, a laccolith, or the neck of a volcanic system.

As the trapped magma cooled it contracted, and contracting rock cracks in a predictable way: into a network of roughly hexagonal columns perpendicular to the cooling surface. That is the same process behind the Giant's Causeway, just at far greater height.

The tower only became a tower because everything around it eroded away. The intrusion is much harder than the surrounding sedimentary rock, so as rivers stripped the softer layers off over tens of millions of years, the resistant core was left standing. Columns still break away occasionally, adding to the boulder field.

Can I actually go there?

YES — easy public access. It is a national monument with a visitor centre, paved parking and the Tower Trail loop at the base. Climbing the tower is permitted under a National Park Service programme, with a voluntary climbing closure in June out of respect for tribal ceremonies.

What the photos don’t tell you

You cannot walk to the top; the summit is for technical climbers only. The site is also actively used for ceremony — you may see prayer cloths and bundles tied nearby, and they are not decorations or photo props.

Does it really look like the photos?

YES — and the columns are more textured up close than wide shots suggest. Morning and late-afternoon light sidelights the fluting; midday flattens it into a grey slab.

Legend has it

Many Northern Plains nations, including the Lakota, Cheyenne, Kiowa and others, hold origin narratives in which children or young women were saved from a bear by rock that rose beneath them, the bear's claws scoring the sides. These are living cultural traditions rather than folklore curiosities, and they are separate from — not a competitor to — the geological explanation above. Several tribes know the formation by names such as Bear Lodge, and there are ongoing efforts to have that name recognised.
