A little history
Floyd County was formed in 1799 and Prestonsburg, one of the older towns in eastern Kentucky, served early on as a river landing and county seat along the Big Sandy's Levisa Fork. Its name honors Colonel John Preston, an early landowner in the area.
Jenny Wiley's story — her 1789 capture by a Native American raiding party after they killed several of her family members, and her eventual escape and return to settler society — became one of the most retold survival narratives in Kentucky frontier history, and the state park and lake named for her sit just outside town.
Coal mining shaped Floyd County's 20th-century economy much as it did the rest of the region, and Prestonsburg grew as a trade center for surrounding mining communities. In more recent decades the city has diversified with a shopping mall, medical facilities, and cultural venues including the Mountain Arts Center, positioning it as an entertainment hub for the upper Big Sandy valley.
